MGasztychMichał Gasztych (PL) began playing saxophone at the age of eight at the Fryderyk Chopin Primary State Music School in Miastko, studying under the guidance of Mr Wiesław Orłowski. In 2011 Michał graduated with distintion the Secondary Music School in Szczecinek, obtaining a musician-instrumentalist certificate. His teacher was Mr Włodzimierz Piesiak. In 2018 Michał graduated at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (CvA), where he studied at the instrumental department – classical saxophone, with professor Arno Bornkamp. At this university he obtained firstly a bachelor’s (2016) and then a master’s degree (2018). Currently, Michał is a Ph.D. student at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music (UMFC) in Warsaw, studying under the supervision of Paweł Gusnar, Ph.D.

Michał incessantly deepens his knowledge by participating in numerous music workshops. He takes part in many masterclasses, among others with Claude Delangle – France, Nobuya Sugawa – Japan, Jean-Denis Michat, Vincent David – France, Jan Schulte-Bunert – Germany, Charles Stolte – Canada, Matjaž Drevenšek – Slovenia, Marcus Weiss – Switzerland, Raaf Hekkema – Netherlands, Kyle Horch – United Kingdom, Paweł Gusnar – Poland, Eugène Rousseau, Branford Marsalis, Otis Murphy, Timothy McAllister – USA. In the summer of 2016, he participated in the International Saxophone Workshops in Gap (France).

Michał Gasztych is already a well-known saxophonist. His artistic output includes solo performances, he played in the Big Band and the chamber orchestra of the Szczecinek Small Philharmonic, Aurelia Saxophone Quartet (Amsterdam), Cartoon Saxophone Quartet (Amsterdam), in the saxophone orchestra of the Conservatory of Amsterdam. He had the honor of playing for the President of the Republic of Poland, during his visit in Miastko (in the north of Poland), for the Queen of the Netherlands – Beatrix Armgard van Oranje-Nassau and the Dutch Minister for Education, Culture and Science – Mariëtte Bussemaker. He played in the orchestra conducted by a famous Polish present-day composer – Mr Krzesimir Dębski, during the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the city of Szczecinek, in Maastricht (Netherlands) at the ‘Musica Sacra’ Festival, at the jubilee festival celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Adolf Sax – ‘SAX14’ in Amsterdam. Together with the Big Band of the Szczecinek Musical Society, he played for famous Polish jazz and pop artists: Krystyna Prońko, Małgorzata Ostrowska, Grażyna Łobaszewska, also for jazz foreign artists and for many other musical events.

Along the way, he won a series of national and international competitions. From the youthful success which was the Grand Prix and the I place at the 24th International Competition for Young Soloists in Luxembourg, throughout the I place at the 5th International Saxophone Competition in Nova Gorica  (Slovenia), I place at the 34th Young Musician Contest in Szczecinek (Poland), I place at the National Polish Competition for the Wind Instruments ‘Miniature 2011’ in Bydgoszcz,  the 7th International Competition ‘Wind Instruments’ in Jastrzębie Zdrój (Poland) – the II place, the 7th National Saxophone Festival in Przeworsk (Poland) – the II place, and many others on which he won first and second places.

In 2010 and 2014 he was a participant in one of the most important saxophone competitions, which was the International Adolphe Sax Competition in Dinant (Belgium; the competition takes place every 4 years).

Having so many achievements caused that the European organization supporting young talents – European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY) – became interested in Michał. This organization publishes the CVs of the most talented youth on their websites.

In 2013, Michał became a scholarship holder of the ‘Young Poland’ program – one of the most important artistic scholarships given by Polish Ministry of Culture.
For artistic achievements in 2007/2008 he also received a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. He is a two-time scholarship holder of the Director of the Center for Artistic Education in Warsaw for high school results and artistic achievements (in the school year 2009/2010 and 2010/2011). In 2011 he received the ‘Man of the Year 2011’ award in the Municipality of Miastko (Poland). For his achievements in the field of music, he received the Award of the Mayor of the City of Szczecinek (Poland) and the Honorary Diploma of the Szczecinek Musical Society.
